WHAT TO SEE in DRESDEN?

10 THINGS TO SEE in DRESDEN

Frauenkirche

The Church of Our Lady or Frauenkirche is undoubtedly one of the symbols of Dresden. It is located on the beautiful Neumarkt square and is surrounded by colorful buildings and restaurant terraces. The Baroque-style Lutheran church stands out on the city skyline due to its height and striking beauty. After its destruction, its reconstruction was completed in 2005. You can also climb the tower for a fee.

Zwinger

A Baroque palace from 1711 located in the historic city center and considered one of the most important places to see in Dresden. The palace has a large central square, where you can find a beautiful garden with several fountains, surrounded by historic buildings and a large terrace, from which you will have the best view of the gardens. The entrance to the garden and the ascent to the terraces is free, but the entrance inside the building is subject to a fee. Among the highlights of the palace are the bell pavilion with the Meissen porcelain carillon, the embankment pavilion and the crown gate with a water-filled moat. A splendor and artistic wealth for which Dresden is also called the "Florence of the North".

Fürstenzug

Here is the largest porcelain mural in the world at over 100 meters long and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Dresden. It is located on Augustusstrasse, right in the heart of the old town, and depicts a parade of knights on its more than 24,000 Meissen porcelain tiles. Just think that it is one of the few monuments that survived the bombings of the Second World War almost intact.

Neustadt

With its 150 pubs, bars and restaurants, the Neustadt district is the place to have fun and spend your evenings in Dresden. The Neustadt district is very lively and quite alternative, with lots of graffiti and street art.

Kunsthofpassage

Located outside the historic center in the alternative and young district of Neustadt is the Kunsthofpassage, another of the most beautiful places to visit in Dresden. This passage, open every day and with free admission, connects five internal courtyards surrounded by facades, each of them very original. Furthermore, during the walk through the courtyards, you will find murals, cafes, terraces, quality shops, small gardens and lots of colour, which make Kunsthofpassage an enchanting place.

Brühl Terrace

Also known as the Brühlsche Terrasse, it is an architectural complex known as the "Balcony of Europe" which offers a magnificent view of the old town, the new part of the city and the Elbe River. Located a few meters from the Frauenkirche, this terrace on the banks of the Elbe is a perfect place to stroll at sunset and have a drink while admiring the beautiful panorama.

Semperoper

One of Europe's leading theaters where Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss premiered some of their best works. The spectacular architecture of the building, destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in 1986, makes it another unmissable stop in Dresden.

Residenzschloss

A palace with different architectural styles which has been the residence of the kings of Saxony. Inside, the Grünes Gewölbe or Green Vault stands out, one of the oldest museums in the world. Other interesting places inside the palace are the Hall of Jewels, the Bronze Room and the internal courtyard. Right next to the patio you can go up to its high tower, from where you will have a fantastic view over the entire historic centre.

Hofkirche

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, located on the magnificent Theaterplatz, is an architectural marvel built from sandstone. This Baroque-style church impresses with an exterior decorated with numerous sculptures of saints and a tower more than 80 meters high.

Yenidze

Although it looks like a mosque at first glance, Yenidze was a former tobacco factory. The managers of the cigarette company were of Turkish origin and wanted this 1907 building to have a Moorish-Byzantine style. Over time it has been transformed into an office building and another curious place to visit in Dresden. It also has a good restaurant under its spectacular glass dome, from where it has a fantastic view of Dresden and the Elbe River.

"SECRET DRESDEN"

Unusual and Particular Places to See in Dresden

Outside the classic places to visit of the city, there is a "Secret Dresden" that has simply bewitched us. Here are the 10 Things and Places to See in Secret Dresden:

  1. Kunsthofpassage & Singing Drain Pipes - A magical place in the city of Dresden. Kunsthofpassage is an artistic experiment. There are in fact a lot of art installations such as the Courtyard of Light, the Courtyard of the Elements, the Courtyard of the Animals and the Courtyard of Metamorphosis. One of the main attractions though is the rain drain system which turns into a musical instrument just when it rains.

  2. Pfunds Molkerei - The most beautiful cheese factory in the world and another of Dresden's must-sees. It is located in the alternative district of Neustadt and is a shop decorated with luxury porcelain and lamps, it served as the inspiration for the Mendl pastry shop from the film "The Grand Budapest Hotel".

  3. Schwebebahn Dresden - The oldest suspended aerial tramway in the world that crosses the city of Dresden. Instead of staying on the tracks like a normal cable car, it travels on a single track from above. The Schwebebahn Dresden connects the urban parts of Loschwitz and Oberloschwitz. It is even called the "floating train".

  4. Dresden Panometer - Inside a former gasometer, here we are in the work of the Austrian artist Yadegar Asisi, who uses the term "panometer", coined by the artist to embody the description of the panorama presented on the internal wall of a former gasometer, a circular natural gas storage tank. Here Dresden is represented as it was from 1695 to 1760.

  5. Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) - The largest treasure in Europe is kept here, in a castle that was bombed during WWII.
