WHAT TO SEE in MODENA?

10 THINGS TO SEE in MODENA

Cathedral & La Ghirlandina

Dedicated to the patron saint of the city, San Geminiano, this imposing Romanesque cathedral is a real pearl of the city. Admire the white and pink colors of its marble and the main door with lions holding up the two columns. Admission is free, so you can go in and enjoy all of its wonderful atmosphere and charm. Next to the Cathedral we find the tower, called Ghirlandina or Torre Civica. It is a five-story square tower, almost 87 meters high, which from a distance appears to be slightly inclined. You can go up for a fee and enjoy the view of the city from above.

Piazza Grande and Town Hall

The Piazza Grande is the one where the cathedral is located, and is the beating heart of the city. It is a large cobbled square where there are markets on Sundays for books, antiques and local specialities. Overlooking the square you can also admire the Palazzo Comunale, a refined seventeenth-century building.

Ducal Palace

A true masterpiece in Baroque style, built between the 17th and 19th centuries and declared a National Historic Monument by UNESCO. It was the residence of the Dukes of Modena and is currently the headquarters of the city's military academy.

Palace of Museums & Estense Gallery

The Palazzo dei Musei is a complex that houses several museums, including the most important, the Galleria Estense. In this Gallery you will find important works by artists such as Bernini, Velázquez and El Greco. Also don't miss the Estense Library (free admission), which is now owned by the University.

Albinelli Market

A few steps from the Duomo you will find this fantastic market, with lots of stalls selling local products, such as balsamic vinegar, lambrusco and many more.

Enzo Ferrari Museum (MEF)

For car enthusiasts, in Modena you will find the Ferrari museum. Born in 1898 in the house of Enzo Ferrari, another yellow aluminum building was later built, a color chosen by Enzo as a symbol of his brand.

Forum Boarium

The magnificent Palazzo del Foro Boario in Modena is strongly linked to the history of the city. Born with the intention of guaranteeing livestock merchants a place that would suit their trades, today the complex houses the headquarters of the Faculty of Economics.

TRAVEL TIPS about MODENA by World Mappers

  • Modena is an avant-garde and alternative city, it is no coincidence that here you can find truly spectacular works of Street Art. The first area we recommend is that of the Palazzetto dello Sport near the Foro Boario, where you will find yourself in front of a giant "Senso Unico" sign. The wall of the entire building is strewn with artwork, so you just have to look around to enjoy it. In addition to the large road sign, the most spectacular works are that of the face deprived of its conscience and transformed into a machine, and the giant octopus that envelops the whole city. Another interesting area is the one near Piazza Pomposa, in the centre. Through the Festival Icone, one of the first international festivals dedicated to street art, Modena has donned a new guise. In 2013 street art was also "exported" from the city to the province, especially the one affected by the 2012 earthquake.

"SECRET MODENA"

Unusual and Particular Places to See in Modena

Outside the classic places to visit of the city, there is a "Secret Modena" that has simply bewitched us. Here are the 5 Things and Places to See in Secret Modena (and Surroundings):

  1. Piazza Pomposa - One of the most mysterious areas of the city with a very special history. Once the area was famous for prostitution, and the Church, to prevent the place from being tied to easy customs, decided to build an ecclesiastical building in the center of the square.

  2. Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia - Just think that it is the second oldest university in Europe, founded in 1175.

  3. Vicolo dei Tornei - A wonderful square hidden in the streets of Modena. Once upon a time, duels and challenges of armed knights were organized here.

  4. Osteria Francescana - One of the best restaurants in the world can be found in Modena - here we are in the luxurious restaurant Osteria Francescana, whose chef Massimo Bottura was included in the "50 best in the world". His cuisine is contemporary and traditional at the same time.

  5. Rossena Castle - Not far from Modena there is a place full of magic and splendor, the Castello di Rossena, located in a beautiful village.
