WHAT TO SEE in SPOLETO?

5 THINGS TO SEE in SPOLETO

Spoleto Cathedral

Just wonderful. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is located in the center of a beautiful square overlooked by Palazzo Rancani, Palazzo della Signoria, the Church of Santa Maria della Manna and the small Teatro Caio Melisso. Not to be missed inside are the splendid frescoes that decorate the apse. Climb the steps in front of the church to admire the square in all its beauty.

Mask Fountain

A stone's throw from the Rocca Albornoziana, in Piazza Bernardino Campello, is one of the most famous monuments of Spoleto: the Fontana del Mascherone. A scenic fountain with human and feline features. A curiosity: to the right of this fountain you will find another smaller one with the inscription BIBE VIATOR, an invitation to drink for thirsty travellers.

Arch of Drusus and Germanicus

Dedicated to the sons of Emperor Tiberius, this arch has been in its position for almost two thousand years (it was erected in 23 AD) and represented the triumphal entrance to the center of the ancient Roman city of Spoletium.

Tower Bridge

A beautiful bridge that connects Colle Sant'Elia, where the Rocca Albornoziana stands, to Monteluco. Nine pylons, ten arches and two watchtowers make this work something truly spectacular. the Ponte delle Torri is passable both by car and on foot.

The Rocca Albornoziana

Built on Mount Sant'Elia, the Rocca was commissioned by the Spanish Cardinal Egidio Albornoz in the mid-1300s. The result was an imposing fortress that was elegant and comfortable at the same time, to host illustrious personalities of the time.

TRAVEL TIPS about SPOLETO by World Mappers

  • If you have time and want to visit all six museums in Spoleto, you should buy the Spoleto Card, a single ticket that will save you money on individual admissions. For more information, consult the dedicated website.

  • A few kilometers from Spoleto rises Monteluco, a small fraction of the municipality of Spoleto immersed in the woods. Here you can see a copy of the "Lex spoletina", the first example of a forest law. Don't miss the Franciscan Sanctuary, where the remains of Blessed Leopoldo da Gaiche are kept.

  • Included in the UNESCO list, the Tempietto sul Clitunno is a small and graceful chapel in the shape of a temple, set along the slope of the Colle di S. Benedetto, in the municipality of Campello sul Clitunno. The vegetation, the temple and the pond at its foot make everything very bucolic.

  • A few kilometers from Spoleto stands one of the most evocative villages in Umbria (and also the one higher up): Monteleone di Spoleto. The town has less than 1000 inhabitants and houses the Palazzo Bernabò, the Church of San Francesco, the Clock Tower, the ancient gate of the medieval castle, and much more. Just think that an Etruscan chariot was found here which is now exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (you can see a copy in the village).

  • Not to be missed is the Festival of Spoleto dei Due Mondi, a historic international event of dance, music, art and theatre, which takes place every year from the last Friday of June to the third following Sunday.
