It is Considered the "ideal city of the Renaissance," Pienza is one of the most charming villages in the Val d'Orcia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every corner offers spectacular views of the Tuscan hills that have made this valley famous worldwide.
San Quirico d'Orcia
In the heart of the Val d'Orcia lies San Quirico d'Orcia, a perfectly preserved medieval village. Strolling along the main street means being immersed in historic buildings, artisan workshops, and small cafés. Don't miss the Horti Leonini, one of the most elegant Italian gardens in Tuscany, and the Collegiate Church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta, the town's symbol. In our opinion this is the perfect base for exploring the Val d'Orcia, and we'll explain why later.
Bagno Vignoni
One of the most unique places in Tuscany is undoubtedly Bagno Vignoni. Instead of the traditional central square, you'll find a large thermal pool that has been the heart of the village for centuries. Strolling among the ancient stone houses and relaxing in the nearby hot springs makes this small town a truly unique stop on a trip to the Val d'Orcia.
Montalcino
World-famous for its Brunello di Montalcino wine, this medieval town dominates the valley from atop a hill. In addition to the numerous wineries and cellars where you can taste one of Italy's most prestigious wines, the 14th-century fortress and the historic center, filled with narrow streets, panoramic terraces, and excellent restaurants, are also worth a visit.
Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta
Among the most photographed symbols of Tuscany is the small Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta, between San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza. Surrounded by rows of cypress trees and rolling hills, it looks like something out of a postcard and is one of the most iconic places in the Val d'Orcia, especially at sunrise and sunset.
How to reach the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta: To reach the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta, you'll need to walk the last stretch. Take Provincial Road 146 and turn onto the dirt road following the brown signs. Park your car where indicated and continue on foot for about 5-10 minutes.
Cypresses of San Quirico d'Orcia
One of Tuscany's most famous landscapes is the famous cypress grove of San Quirico d'Orcia, in the locality of I Triboli, along the Via Cassia. This small, perfectly circular hill, topped by dozens of cypress trees, has become an icon of landscape photography. There are actually two groves (one circular, the other diamond-shaped). San Filippo Baths

Poggio Covili

The best time to visit is at dawn or dusk, leaving your car in the outdoor spaces along the road so as not to block the property's private entrance.
Montepulciano
Situated on the edge of the Val d'Orcia, Montepulciano is one of the most beautiful visits in the area. Relax in the natural hot springs in Val d'Orcia
If you're looking for a relaxing experience immersed in Tuscany's nature, the Val d'Orcia offers some of the best free natural hot springs in Italy. Here are two unmissable stops and what to know before you go.
Bagni San Filippo (Fosso Bianco) - The most spectacular thermal experience. Located in the municipality of Castiglione d'Orcia, Fosso Bianco is a thermal stream nestled in the woods, famous for the White Whale, a monumental limestone formation created by water sediments.
The water: It flows from the source at 48°C and mixes with the cold stream, creating natural pools at various temperatures (perfect even in the coldest months).
Access and Cost: Free. The forest trail is about a 10-minute walk from the main road.
Parking: Paid parking along the road (blue lines, ~€1.50/hour).
Please note: Climbing the White Whale or swimming in its immediate vicinity is strictly prohibited to protect the rock.
Bagno Vignoni (Parco dei Mulini) - Relax between history and nature. A hamlet of San Quirico d'Orcia, Bagno Vignoni is unique for its Piazza delle Sorgenti (the famous 16th-century pool in the center of town, where swimming is prohibited). To soak for free, head down to Parco dei Mulini, at the foot of the cliff.
The water: It flows through ancient rock channels (gorelli) into a natural pool with a milky turquoise color. The water is warm, ideal especially in spring and summer.
Access and Cost: Free for both the park and the natural area.
Please note: Compared to San Filippo, the water is less warm because it cools as you descend the rock face.

It's a hospitality concept designed to give travelers the authentic experience of living in a true Tuscan village, without sacrificing the services and comforts of a hotel. Unlike a traditional structure enclosed within a single building, the albergo diffuso's rooms and suites are spread throughout finely restored historic homes and buildings in the town center, all easily accessible on foot, as well as a charming villa located just outside the village. From cold cuts and cheese platters to fresh handmade pasta, here are the typical dishes and local gastronomic specialties that you cannot miss during your trip to Val d'Orcia:
Tuscan appetizer (Antipasto Toscano) with Cinta Senese DOP cured meats: A must-have to start the meal, it includes a generous platter of local cured meats (prosciutto, lard, capocollo, finocchiona) accompanied by Tuscan PGI extra virgin olive oil.
Tuscan Crostini and Crostoni: Slices of Tuscan bread toasted and topped with classic chicken liver pâté, or with cavolo nero, Monte Amiata porcini mushrooms, or cannellini bean cream.
Pecorino di Pienza DOP: The area's quintessential cheese, available in various ages (fresh, semi-aged, aged in barriques or in marc), to be enjoyed alone or paired with local honeys and jams.

Panzanella is a cold salad made with stale bread, ripe tomatoes, onion, and basil; pappa al pomodoro is a thick and flavorful bread and tomato soup served warm or at room temperature.
Ribollita (Winter Specialty): The classic and comforting soup of stale Tuscan bread, black cabbage and cannellini beans, perfect for the colder months.
Chianina Florentine Steak: Grilled for one of the region's finest cuts of meat.

TRAVEL TIPS for the VAL d'ORCIA from World Mappers
Getting around Val d'Orcia: a car is essential. Public transportation in Val d'Orcia is very limited and mainly connects the larger towns with infrequent schedules. To explore the villages, reach the farmhouses, and stop at scenic spots along the provincial roads, a car (or motorcycle) is essential. If you arrive by train, the most convenient stations for renting a car are Chiusi-Chianciano Terme or Siena.
Lose yourself among the scenic roads of the Val d'Orcia. Much of the beauty of the Val d'Orcia can be discovered simply by driving along its country roads. Rolling hills, rows of cypress trees, stone farmhouses, vineyards, and farmland unfold in succession, offering views that change with the seasons. It's one of Italy's best road trips, and every curve offers a new opportunity to stop and photograph the landscape.
Beware of restricted traffic zones (ZTLs) in villages: Villages like Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia, Montalcino, and Montepulciano are entirely pedestrian or covered by ZTLs (Limited Traffic Zones). Park in the parking lots (often paid, blue lines) just outside the medieval walls and explore the villages on foot.
A traveler's tip: respect private property. Many of the most photographed spots in the Val d'Orcia, from the famous cypress groves to the driveways of farmhouses to the hills of Vitaleta, are located within or on the borders of private property and working farms. To capture the perfect photo, always avoid climbing over fences, trampling crops, or parking in an obstructed area. Respecting signs, staying on public paths and roads, and maintaining discretion are the best ways to ensure these stunning landscapes remain accessible and protected for all.
What's the best time? The Val d'Orcia changes completely depending on the season:
Spring (April - May): It's the iconic time of emerald green hills, cypress trees, and blooms. The weather is perfect for hiking or biking.
Autumn (October - November): The season of the grape harvest, of warm colors, of foliage in the vineyards and of tastings of wine and new oil.
Summer (July - August): The fields turn golden (after the June harvest), but temperatures can exceed 35°C and the hills are barren. If traveling in summer, plan to visit villages early in the morning or at sunset.
Reservations. Historic trattorias, traditional osterias, and tasting tours of Brunello di Montalcino or Nobile di Montepulciano wineries must be booked well in advance, especially on weekends and during peak seasons (spring and fall). Arriving in Pienza or Montalcino on weekends without a reservation often means long waits or having to settle.
When it comes to nightlife and LGBTQIA+-specific entertainment, Val d'Orcia faithfully reflects its rural and laid-back soul: you won't find dedicated clubs, queer venues, or themed evenings. Evening life here flows at a gentle pace, with aperitifs in wine bars nestled among the alleys, intimate dinners in osterias, and small concerts in village squares.
This doesn't mean the welcome isn't warm and welcoming. Thanks to a constant flow of travelers from around the world, agritourisms, boutique hotels, and restaurants offer a completely inclusive and gay-friendly atmosphere, where you'll feel welcome and at ease. It's the ideal destination if you're looking for relaxation, nature, and good food; if you're looking for evenings and events specifically designed for the queer community, just a short drive away is nearby cities like Siena or Arezzo:
Arezzo (about an hour's drive). Whynot? (at Class 125): This is the go-to queer and inclusive disco night for the Arezzo area and southern Tuscany. It's organized periodically (usually one Saturday a month) by the Chimera Arcobaleno association, featuring DJ sets, drag shows, and a very festive atmosphere.
Siena (about 45-50 minutes by car). Siena doesn't have a permanent gay nightclub, but it does have an active community. Corte dei Miracoli / Spazio Sicuro: This is a very active cultural and social center that regularly hosts events, meetings, book presentations, screenings, and fundraising evenings open to the community.
Grosseto and Maremma (about 1 hour - 1 hour and 15 minutes by car). ENJOY - Rainbow People's Party: A very popular traveling LGBTQ+ & friends party that stops at various clubs in the Grosseto province.
Bikes and e-bikes: beautiful, but be careful of the elevation gain. If you want to explore the area on two wheels or ride sections of the Via Francigena, choose an e-bike (electric bike) unless you're very fit. The picture-perfect landscapes are a constant series of ups and downs, with some very challenging gradients under the sun. We relied on Toscana on the Road in San Quirico d'Orcia for e-bike rentals. This local company offers tailor-made solutions for every type of traveler: you can choose from e-bikes to enjoy nature at a leisurely pace, iconic Vespas, or charming vintage Fiat 500s for a retro-inspired journey. An excellent option for moving around in complete freedom and turning every trip into a memorable experience.
