WHAT TO SEE in ORVIETO?

10 THINGS TO SEE in ORVIETO

Cathedral of Orvieto

As soon as we arrived in the Piazza del Duomo in Orvieto we were amazed by the beauty and grandeur of the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the city's cathedral. A marvel of Italian Gothic art that conquers at first sight thanks to the richly decorated facade and the side walls with the typical alternating black and white stripes. Don't miss a visit of the interior embellished with some really beautiful frescoes that are worth the price of the entrance ticket.

Chapel of San Brizio

The frescoes that decorate this chapel are our favorites. The theme of the decoration is the Last Judgment with the classic succession of angels, demons and sinners. We would have spent hours staring at every single scene.

Pozzo di San Patrizio (St. Patrick's Well)

A 62m deep engineering marvel that will take you "to the center" of the earth. Get ready to go down 258 steps (although the real problem will be climbing them up to get out) until you reach a small stretch of water still fed by a natural spring. The well was built in 1527 with the aim of ensuring water in Orvieto at any time of the year, especially in the event of a siege. A curiosity: the name derives from the similarity of the well to the cavity where St. Patrick retired to pray.

Orvieto Underground

For years the inhabitants of Orvieto have dug into the tuff on which the city stands, building another one, underground and hidden. A complex labyrinth of tunnels, caves, wells and cisterns. Discovered by chance after a landslide, legends circulated about underground Orvieto but no one had proof. Today it is possible to discover Orvieto underground thanks to the Orvieto Underground project which accompanies tourists to discover this fascinating itinerary. For info and prices, check out their website.

Piazza del Popolo

Unfortunately this is now a parking lot and therefore during the day it is invaded by cars. We advise you to see it in the evening. It is charming only at night when the lights go on and the cars go away. The square is dominated by the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, with its tower and a beautiful staircase leading to the entrance hall. Today the building houses an exhibition area and spaces for congresses and events.

Orvieto Cathedral Opera Museum

The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (MODO) actually consists of 4 small spaces, including the Chapel of San Brizio (point 2), the Church of Sant'Agostino and the Albèri Library. But it is the papal palaces, adjacent to the cathedral, that preserve the most interesting works of art.

Moro Tower

The perfect place from which to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Duomo and the roofs of Orvieto. As always, to be able to enjoy a beautiful view you have to suffer a little and therefore be prepared to face 250 very steep steps. Surely when you get to the top, the panorama will make you forget the effort. The clock, a reference point for Orvieto residents and tourists, began working in 1885 and is still there.

The Albornoz Fortress

Anyone who has seen Orvieto at least once, even if only from the motorway, has had the impression of a fortified and impregnable city due to its elevated position on a cliff. The construction of the Albornoz Fortress in 1359 made the city even safer. Today it houses the public gardens and is the ideal place for a break with a magnificent view of the surrounding valley.

St Andrew's Church

Located in Piazza della Repubblica, this church struck us for the peculiarity of the dodecagonal tower that flanks it.

Belvedere Temple

near the Pozzo di San Patrizio, in the eastern area of Orvieto, is the only Etruscan temple in the town, dating back to the 5th century BC. Only the base of the building, the entrance stairway and some perimeter blocks are visible. Some archaeological finds are conserved in the Faina Museum in front of the Cathedral.

TRAVEL TIPS about ORVIETO by World Mappers

  • Found by chance, at the Pizzeria Farnese just outside the city, don't miss the best panoramic point of Orvieto from which to observe the city from afar in all its grandeur.

  • And here we are at the usual paragraph on Street Art, our great passion (especially Simone's). In the historic center of Orvieto you won't find street art but in the slightly more peripheral areas, if you are a fan of the genre, you can find some nice surprises. We leave you here the link of the map to find the best Street Art works of Orvieto, created on the occasion of the "Strade dell'arte di strada" project.
