GREAT WALL OF CHINA in CHINA

Practical information to best organize your trip to this destination with details on when to go, necessary documents, how to get around and much more

BRIEF HISTORY of the GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic monuments in the world and represents one of the most important symbols of China. Its construction began over 2,000 years ago, during the Warring States period, but it was under the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC) that Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified and connected the various existing fortifications. Subsequently, the Wall was enlarged and strengthened during several dynasties, particularly under the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), when the best-preserved sections today were built. The Great Wall was not only a defensive structure, but also a system of communication, border control, and protection of trade routes along the Silk Road.

HOW LONG IS THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The Great Wall of China is over 21,000 kilometers long, crossing mountains, deserts, and plains in northern China. It is not a single continuous wall, but a complex system of fortifications built at different times. The best preserved and visitable sections today are mainly located around Beijing, while other, more remote parts pass through less touristy regions.

WHERE IS THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The Great Wall of China stretches over 21,000 kilometers across northern China, crossing mountains, deserts, and plains. The most visited sections are located near the city of Beijing, making it easily accessible for tourists. The most popular areas are located about 1-2 hours from the capital, and include restored and well-organized sections for visiting. However, the Wall also passes through provinces such as Hebei, Shanxi and Gansu.

WHEN TO VISIT THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The best time to visit the Great Wall of China is during spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), when temperatures are milder and visibility is better. Summer can be very hot and crowded, while winter offers picturesque scenery with fewer tourists, but with cold temperatures and possible ice along the way. It is recommended to avoid major Chinese holidays such as Golden Week and Chinese New Year, when the Wall is particularly crowded.

HOW LONG IT TAKES TO VISIT THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The time it takes to visit the Great Wall of China depends on the stretch you choose. A standard visit lasts 2 to 4 hours, while for longer excursions or treks between different sections you can also dedicate a full day. Many travelers choose a day trip from Beijing, while others prefer to combine the visit with other nearby attractions.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GO TO THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The cost of visiting the Great Wall of China varies depending on the section you choose and the services included. The entrance fee generally costs between 30 and 80 yuan (about 4-10 euros). Some sections also offer cable cars, chairlifts, or sleds, which can increase the total cost by up to 20-40 euros. Additionally, you should consider transportation from Beijing, which can range from a few euros by public transport to 50-100 euros for organized private tours. The cost of visiting the Wall can therefore vary greatly, depending on the type of experience you want.

HOW TO VISIT THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The Great Wall of China can be visited in several ways. Many travelers choose day trips from Beijing, while others prefer to organize their trip independently using public transportation or private cars. Visits can be short walks on restored sections or longer treks on less touristy sections. Some travelers also choose guided tours, which include transportation, a guide, and entry, making the experience easier and more organized.

HOW TO GET TO THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA from BEIJING

Getting to the Great Wall from Beijing is easy and there are several options available. You can use public transport, book an organized tour or choose a private car. Some sections of the Wall are easily accessible by bus or train, while others require longer transfers. Most sections are located between 1 and 2 hours away from the capital.

We opted for an independent visit by taking a didi from Beijing to the Mutianyu ticket office (about 70 km from the city). It takes about an hour and a half to two hours by car and costs about 30 euros per ride.

CAN YOU VISIT THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA INDEPENDENTLY?

Yes, you can visit the Great Wall of China independently without organized tours. Many travelers prefer this solution for greater flexibility and cost savings. However, some less touristy sections can be more difficult to reach, so it's important to plan transportation in advance and check schedules.

TIPS for VISITING THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA in CHINA by the World Mappers

  • Visiting the Great Wall of China requires a minimum of preparation. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes, bring water and always check the weather conditions. Some sections of the Wall are steep and require a fair level of fitness.

  • Arriving early in the morning allows you to avoid the crowds and enjoy the view with greater tranquility. Furthermore, choosing less touristy sections allows for a more authentic experience.

  • Don't forget to bring your passport, sunscreen, and camera: the Great Wall of China is one of the most spectacular places to visit during a trip to China.

  • We chose to visit Mutianyu, and here's a tip to avoid crowds: arrive as early as possible in the morning, ideally at opening time (as early as 7/7:30). The early hours of the day are the best time to enjoy the Great Wall with fewer tourists, more pleasant temperatures and better visibility for photographs. Immediately take the chairlift to the highest part, Tower 14 and then walk towards Tower 15 along the Wall in the direction of the less frequented towers. Most visitors tend to stay close to the main entrance, so even a 15–20 minute walk is enough to find much quieter and more scenic stretches. Finally, if possible, avoid weekends, Chinese holidays and the summer months, when visitor numbers increase significantly. Visiting Mutianyu on a weekday will allow you to have a much more authentic and relaxed experience on the Great Wall of China.

  • Visiting the Great Wall with children or elderly people? Some sections of the Great Wall of China are more accessible and suitable for families with children or less fit travelers. The restored sections offer simpler routes and services such as cable cars and chairlifts, which make it easier to visit. It is recommended to choose less steep sections to make the experience more enjoyable.

  • Can you see the Great Wall of China from space? Contrary to popular belief, the Great Wall of China is not visible to the naked eye from space. This is one of the most widespread but incorrect curiosities.

  • Is the Great Wall of China worth a visit? Visiting the Great Wall of China is considered one of the most important experiences during a trip to China. It is one of the most iconic monuments in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and we highly recommend it.
