Zhangjiajie City is the main urban center and arrival point (with airport, station and hotel), but it is not the natural park. The real nature site is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, which is located about 30-40 minutes from the city and is part of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, famous for its mountains “Avatar-type”.
To visit Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, it's best to sleep in Wulingyuan.
Another completely different destination is Tianmen Mountain, which is located near Zhangjiajie City but is not part of the forest park. It is famous for the “Sky Walk”, the scenic road and the famous Heaven's Gate (Heaven's Gate).
Bottom line: Zhangjiajie City is the logistics base for getting to Tianmen Mountain, a separate attraction with completely different experiences. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the iconic nature and landscapes with overnight stay in Wulingyuan. Confusing them is one of the most common mistakes among travelers.
