WHAT TO SEE in SOAVE?

5 THINGS TO SEE in SOAVE

Soave Castle

The beautiful Scaliger manor that dominates the village of Soave from the top of Monte Tenda. From the central tower, located at the highest point, three laps of crenellated walls start to protect the village. This creates three internal courtyards to be crossed before reaching the tower. After passing the first circle, you enter the courtyard of the Madonna and from here you continue towards the inner courtyard where there is the central tower (keep) and the Casa del Capitano, the residence of the commander of the soldiers who guarded the castle. Inside, three rooms are richly decorated with frescoes and a beautiful ceiling. The castle can be reached with a nice walk that starts from the center of the town, in Piazza dell'Antenna (for the laziest, however, it can also be reached by car up to the parking lot just outside the walls). From the top of the hill, the view of the village of Soave and the surrounding valleys is stupendous.

Village & Scaliger Walls

The wall that encloses the oldest part of the village of Soave is truly impressive (think that there are 24 towers) and spectacular. There are three gateways to the village: Porta Aquila, Porta Vicentina and Porta Verona. From Porta Aquila you enter directly into via Roma, the main street of Soave. In the historic centre, don't miss the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Bassanella, the Church of San Giorgio, the Church of Santa Maria dei Domenicani, the Church of San Rocco, the Church of Sant'Antonio and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo Martire.

Cathedral of San Lorenzo Martyr

The structure visible today dates back to the mid-eighteenth century. The main facade is beautiful with references to the neoclassical style and the Palladian style. In the 19th century the architecture was enlarged and decorated in the Baroque style.

Palaces of Soave

In Piazza dell'Antenna we meet the Palace of Justice, built in 1375 and today the seat, on the ground floor, of a beautiful tavern. Not far away is Palazzo Cavalli, in typical Venetian-Gothic style and built in 1411 at the behest of Nicolò Cavalli, Captain of Soave. Finally Palazzo Pullici known for having hosted the writer Ippolito Nievo in some periods of his childhood. At Porta Aquila is the Palazzo Scaligero, also known as Palazzo del Capitano (during the Venetian domination the captains were the highest authority). The Zanella Baccio Park is annexed to the palace, a beautiful garden that develops uphill in the shadow of the Castle.

Soave Wine Road

This is the production area of Soave, the DOC white wine which is produced in the territory at the end of the Lessini Hills in the Province of Verona. In addition to the town of Soave there are several municipalities that are part of this association. The idea of creating a Soave Wine Road was born in 1999 not only as a route through vineyards and cellars in the area, but also and above all as a large family of wineries, producers, agritourisms, accommodation facilities and many other entities that together they want to promote and support their territory. Find out more about the Soave Wine Route below in the World Mappers Recommendations.

TRAVEL TIPS about SOAVE by World Mappers

  • The collaboration with the Soave Wine Route was a unique and very interesting experience. Thanks to the contribution and extraordinary work of Cristina and the president Paolo, we were able to immerse ourselves in the wine culture of Soave and its excellent wine. From production techniques to the history of Borgo di Soave, a magical journey through the tastes and flavors of a territory that represents Italian excellence. To better grasp the essence of all this, we leave you the words taken from the Association's website: "an ideal route of about 50 km along which it is possible to admire the landscape, visit cellars, taste wine, taste typical dishes and come into contact with the hospitality of the people. The Strada del Vino Soave was born with the aim of offering a complete package of proposals and services: those who love culture and art can count not only on the undoubted scenic beauty of the area but also on Romanesque churches, villas, castles and museums.Tourists who come to the denomination can choose from a wide and varied offer within the thirteen municipalities that adhere to the Road, spread over four stupendous valleys which, due to their various attractions, are certainly worth a visit." (Val di Mezzane, Val d'Illasi, Val Tramigna and Val d'Alpone). Last curiosity: think that the Soave area is considered by extension the largest vineyard in Europe. • We suggest an itinerary on the Soave Wine Road to fully enjoy this beautiful area. It starts from the Village of Soave with its imposing castle and its wonderful village, to then continue by car towards Monteforte d'Alpone and its Bishop's Palace. We continue to Montecchia di Crosara with its church of San Salvatore located on the hill. We then continue towards Illasi passing through Villa Sagramoso, a noble residence from the 1600s surrounded by a wonderful 19th-century park inside which stands a medieval castle. We then arrive at two wonderful villages in the area: Mezzane di Sotto and Pieve di Colognola ai Colli. Finally, we return to Soave to enjoy a good glass of Soave Classico.

  • Among the various activities offered by the Soave Wine Route, there is a visit to the Tessari winery, a small quiet corner in the hills. In addition to the guided tour, the walks among the vines, the picnics in the vineyards and the tastings, it is also possible to stay overnight in the fantastic Corte Grisela, just like we did.

  • Another activity organized by the Soave Wine Route is a visit to the Rocca Sveva Winery which simply left us speechless. Thanks to Margherita's visit and explanations, we were able to fully grasp the aromas and tastes of their wines, to learn their history and characteristics and to fall in love with this fascinating world. Not to mention the underground cellars... a show.
