Un laboratorio artigianale dove ancora oggi si realizzano a mano maschere di cartapesta, seguendo l'antica tradizione dei mascherieri risalente al 1100, e bellissimi costumi d'epoca di carnevale. Il negozio di maschere e l'atelier si trovano entrambi in Campo San Tomà, uno a poca distanza dall'altro. Arriviamo al negozio e veniamo calorosamente accolti dalla simpatia della signora Rossella che ci illustra la storia dell'Atelier e ci fa scoprire qualche segreto sulle maschere esposte (saremmo stati ore ad ascoltarla). We arrive at the shop and we are warmly welcomed by the sympathy of Mrs. Rossella who illustrates the history of the Atelier and makes us discover some secrets about the masks on display (we would have spent hours listening to her). Scopriamo così che il nome "Bauta" deriva dalla maschera veneziana per antonomasia, risalente al XVI-XVII secolo e utilizzata sia da uomini, sia da donne in svariate occasioni. Facilmente riconoscibile per la forma allungata del labbro superiore (che deformava la voce di chi la indossava e permetteva di bere e mangiare senza toglierla) e associata a un mantello nero e un tricorno (cappello a tre punte) nero. Questa maschera non veniva usata solo a carnevale ma anche in varie occasioni durante l'anno, quando si voleva mantenere l'anonimato. Il passato della Serenissima è ricco di leggi che consentivano o limitavano l'uso delle maschere. Una parte di storia veneziana che ignoravamo e che ci ha affascinato moltissimo. We discover so that the name "Bauta" derives from the Venetian mask par excellence, dating back to the XVI-XVII century and used by both men and women on various occasions. Easily recognizable by the elongated shape of the upper lip (which deformed the voice of the wearer and allowed to drink and eat without taking it off) and associated with a black cloak and a black tricorn (three-pointed hat). This mask was not only used at carnival but also on various occasions during the year, when anonymity was desired. The past of the Serenissima Republic is full of laws that allowed or limited the use of masks. A part of Venetian history that we ignored and that fascinated us a lot. Le creazioni dell'Atelier La Bauta seguono ancora oggi i procedimenti e le tecniche di un tempo. All'interno del negozio ci troviamo circondati da centinaia di maschere, dalle più semplici alle più ricercate e sontuosamente decorate. Uno spettacolo davvero bellissimo. La nostra visita è proseguita poi al vero e proprio atelier dove abbiamo trovato ad attenderci centinaia di costumi, tutti realizzati rigorosamente a mano e accompagnati da parrucche, scarpe coordinate e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Chiusa la porta d'ingresso sembra di aver fatto un salto indietro nel tempo. The creations of the Atelier La Bauta still follow the procedures and techniques of the past. Inside the shop we are surrounded by hundreds of masks, from the simplest to the most refined and sumptuously decorated. A very beautiful sight! Our visit then continued to the real atelier where we found hundreds of costumes waiting for us, all made strictly by hand and accompanied by wigs, coordinated shoes and whoever has more. Closed the front door, it seems to have made a step back in time. PRODOTTI / PRODUCTS : Sono più di 500 i modelli di maschere disponibili presso il negozio, a partire dalle tradizionali maschere di carnevale, passando per quelle della commedia d'arte e quelle più moderne. Tutte le maschere vengono create seguendo il metodo antico e tradizionale della carta pesta. Strati di carta, farina e acqua come collante e stampi di gesso fatti a mano, sono questi i tre segreti per la realizzazione di vere e proprie opere d'arte. Dopo l'asciugatura, un lavoro di rifinitura con carta abrasiva rende le superfici adatte alla decorazione. Ed è proprio qui che semplici maschere bianche prendono vita. Anche in questa fase si usano antiche tecniche tradizionali come lo "stucco", l'applicazione di foglia d'oro e d'argento, colori acrilici, decoupage e sfumature antiche con bitume, finendo con macramè, perle, passamanerie e piume naturali. There are more than 500 models of masks available at the shop, starting from the traditional carnival masks, passing through those of the art commedy and the more modern ones. All masks are created following the ancient and traditional method of paper mache. Layers of paper, flour and water as glue and handmade plaster molds, these are the three secrets for creating real works of art. After drying, a finishing job with abrasive paper makes the surfaces suitable for decoration. And it is precisely here that simple white masks come to life. Also in this phase, ancient traditional techniques are used such as "stucco", the application of gold and silver leaf, acrylic colors, decoupage and ancient shades with bitumen, ending with macramé, pearls, trimmings and natural feathers. LABORATORI & VISITE / WORKSHOPS & VISITS : L'Atelier offre un'ampia scelta di attività e laboratori legati alle maschere: Corso di Decorazione "DECORA LA TUA MASCHERA" Qui i partecipanti, seguiti e consigliati dai loro collaboratori, possono scegliere tra 60 modelli di maschere di cartapesta fatte a mano e imparare l’arte della decorazione. Corso di Cartapesta "CREA LA TUA MASCHERA IN CARTAPESTA" Un laboratorio didattico pratico dove poter scegliere uno dei 12 stampi in gesso di maschere e realizzare con la cartapesta la propria maschera. Corso Teorico sul "CARNEVALE DI VENEZIA, LE MASCHERE E LA TECNICA DELLA LAVORAZIONE DELLE MASCHERE" Per entrare nella tradizione veneziana e nella storia del Carnevale di Venezia, con le principali maschere e le differenti fasi di realizzazione di una maschera di cartapesta.
